Henry was the son of Thomas Gilbert and his wife, Catherine Chapin, widow of Nathaniel Bliss.
He was sent to Brookfield in charge of soldiers with the purpose of building a fort there. Later, he moved there with his brother, Capt. Thomas Gilbert, who had received 681 acres in land grants.
He was a Deacon.
