Michael J. "Red" Adanti, age 65, husband of Linda Shashinska Adanti, of Shelton, died in a car accident in Italy, after celebrating two weeks vacation for his wedding anniversay.

He was born to the late Nancy Micci Adanti DiMauro. He graduated from Ansonia High School, Class of 1958 and from Southern Connecticut State University, where he was an outstanding football player. He taught for several years in the Ansonia school system before taking a job as assistant dean at Southern Connecticut State University. He also played football for a season with the Ansonia Black Knights in the Atlantic Coast League. He served two terms as the 19th mayor of Ansonia, 1973-1977. He was the Democratic party's Congressional Candidate for the 5th district in 1976. Adanti became the first graduate of Southern to become its president in 1984, serving for 19 years. His tenure at the school was marked by extensive growth in enrollment and campus construction. The school offered its first doctoral program in education during Adanti's tenure. When Adanti retired in 2003, the school named its new student center after him. The Michael J. Adanti Student Center is expected to open in the fall. Among his many community activities, Adanti was on the board of directors of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Naugatuck Valley's Birmingham Utilities water company, the Ansonia Economic Development Commission and the Connecticut Police Foundation. Most recently, Adanti became president and CEO of a mortgage company, the Monetary Funding Group of Connecticut.

In addition to his wife Linda, who was injured in the accident, he is survived by his daughter, Kristen Pedersen and her husband, Jon, of Milford; son, Michael Adanti and his wife, Jeanneace, of Ansonia; two sisters, Margaret Barbaro of East Haven and Marie Jennings of Shelton; three grandchildren, Michael Pedersen and Jon Pedersen Jr. of Milford and Lindsay Adanti of Ansonia.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Avenue, Shelton.
