Enlisted, August 15, 1916, in Troop A, Squadron A Cavalry, in New York City. served with Troop A Squadron A Cavalry on the Mexican border from August to December 28, 1916. attended Plattsburgh Officer's Training, Commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, August 15, 1917, promoted 1st Lieutenant December 3, 1917 and Captain July 3, 1918. Assigned to the 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division. He deployed to Europe with the 77th Division, April 13, 1918. He saw combat in France and wounded in action ( gassed )and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross order # 2086 and Croix de Guerre. Returned to the States May 4, 1918. Discharged from the service, May 13, 1918.

Citation " U. S. Army, Capt. Bradford Ellsworth, 306th Infantry, for distinguished and exceptional gallantry at Farm des Dames on August 12, 1918, in operations of the A. E. F. in testimony therof , and as an expression of appreciation of his valor I award him this citation ( Signed ) John J Pershing. Awarded March 27, 1919.

" This is to that Capt. Bradford Ellsworth , 306h Infantry, has been awarded Distinguished Service Cross No. 2086, for extraordinary heroism in action near La Besarc, France November 5, 1918. Capt. Ellsworth displayed great courage by leading a mounted reconnaissance patrol a kilometer in advance of our lines, developed the enemy's line by drawing fire from his machine guns and remained under this heavy machine gun fire until the emplacements had been located ."
