Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, June 3, 1930, page 1:
Frederick William Gerfen, a widely known resident of this city for many years, died at the family home at 260 Coventry Place this morning about 5:30 o'clock, at the age of forty-nine years, following an illness of about a year and a half due to cancer.
Mr. Gerfen was born in Hille, Germany, April 5, 1881 and came to this country with his parents at the age of four months. The family settled in Troy where he was confirmed March 18, 1894 by Rev. Ludwig W. Dornseif of the Lutheran Church. He was united in marriage to Miss Martha Zimmerman of Breese by Rev. Aldridge in the Evangelical Church at St. Charles, Mo., July 5, 1905. The couple made their home in Breese for fourteen years, coming to this city where they have lived since that time.
He was a carpenter and an active member of the Local Carpenter's Union, at one time being president of the Union. Mr. Gerfen also belonged to the Eden Evangelical Church here.
His wife, five children, Carl, Dorothy Landwehr, Wilma, Eleanore and Orville, one son-in-law, Harold Landwehr, one sister, Mrs. George Wendler, Sr., of Collinsville and two brothers, Fred of Troy and Carl of Breese, survive. Mr. Gerfen had been failing in health for some time but his condition had not been considered serious until November when he was forced to remain in bed until his death.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at one thirty o'clock from the Marks and Weber Funeral Home on Main Street thence to the Eden Evangelical Church on Second Street at two o'clock with Rev. H.J. Bredehoeft officiating. Six nephews will serve as pall bearers and interment will be made in Valley View Cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Funeral Home until the services take place.
