Christine L. Garcia, 56, of Miller, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 9, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Miller with Pastor Mark Johnsen officiating. Burial will be at G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller at a later date. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Christine (Chris) Louise Slunecka was born on May 9, 1957 to Robert and Doris (Morris) Slunecka in Redfield, SD. Christine grew up on the family farm northwest of Ree Heights. She attended Campbell Township School, which was only one-half mile from home through fifth grade and the rest of elementary and junior high years she attended in Ree Heights. The high school years were in Miller where she graduated from in 1975. She then moved to Minneapolis, MN. After a few months in Minnesota, she traveled to the Los Angeles, CA area where she lived for 19 years. On May 9, 1981, Christine married Angel Garcia and to this union a son, Xavier, was born, on February 19, 1985. They returned to Miller in 1995.

Christine loved singing but following her cancer treatments she was unable to do so. However she still enjoyed music and movies. Christine loved her family and she also had a love for dogs. She was known to have rescued many from the shelters. She helped raise livestock on the farm, liked being outdoors and gardening and home improvement projects. She also looked forward to spending time at the family lot at Cottonwood Lake. Christine was honored at the 1999 Hand County Relay for Life; the City of Miller proclaimed on August 20 & 21, 1999 as Christine Garcia Day.

Christine is survived by Angel Garcia of Orlando, FL; son, Xavier (Mariah) Garcia of Miller; grandchildren: Alana, Xander, and Dominic Garcia; parents, Robert and Doris Slunecka of Miller; two siblings, Kay Lynn Burnham of Highmore and Brenda (Bill) Becker of Redfield; nieces and nephews: Chandra Burnham (Bryant Larson) of Kansas City, KS, Tyler Burnham of Dallas, TX, Vanessa (Jason) Vacanti of Omaha, NE and Damon Becker of Redfield; pet, Buster.

Preceding her in death were her paternal and maternal grandparents and a special dog, Jet.
