Helen Dunnells Wentworth, 106, of Acton, passed away two days shy of her 107th birthday on Thursday March 29, 2012 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford. She was born on March 31, 1905 in Newfield a daughter of the late Lester and Mabel (Chick) Dunnells. She graduated from Ethan Stone High School in that community.

Following graduation, she went to Acton to teach. Eventually, she earned a lifetime teaching certificate from Gorham Normal School by attending during summers while she continued to teach in Acton, Waterboro and Milton Mills. She substitute taught throughout her life in various area schools.

She married Norman L. Wentworth in 1929, and they celebrated 62 happy years together until his death in 1991. She lived on Foxes Ridge in Acton and was an active member of the Acton-Mills Baptist Church for many years before moving to Wilson Lake in Acton. She was a member of the Acton Congregational Church and a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Newfield and Acton-Shapleigh Historical Societies, the York County Retired Educators Association, and other civic organizations. She was also an RSVP volunteer at the Newton Center for many years.

She was very family-oriented woman and an excellent cook and seamstress. She loved children, birds, flowers, the outdoors and cats. She maintained copious family genealogy records, family scrapbooks, and news item collections. She enjoyed keeping in touch with friends, continuing correspondence with several of them right up until recently.

She was Acton’s oldest resident and has held the town’s Boston Post Gold Cane since 2002.

She is survived by three children, a daughter, Joyce Cunningham and her husband, Cliff of Acton, twin sons, Harlan Wentworth and his wife, Doris of Acton, and Erlan Wentworth and his wife, Roberta of Newfield, four grandchildren, Cindy Cunningham Wicks and her husband, Kurt of North Greenbush, New York, Alan Cunningham of Blackstone, Massachusetts, Scott Wentworth and his wife, Debbie of Fremont, New Hampshire, and Pamela Wentworth Baxter and her husband, Chuck of New Durham, New Hampshire, seven great-grandchildren, Ryan Wicks, Jenny Wicks, Chad Cunningham, Craig Cunningham, Brittany Baxter, Victoria Baxter and Amanda Wentworth.

Helen’s family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. John B. McGuckin who never failed to bring a smile to her lips and a sparkle to her eyes and to the entire staff of Greenwood Center for their loving care of her during this last year of her long life.

Burial will be private at the Milton Mills Cemetery in Milton Mills, NH.

A celebration of her life will be held on April 14 at 1PM at the Acton Congregational Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.

Wentworth Educator’s Fund of the Acton Congregational Church, PO Box 28, Acton, ME 04001 to be used to provide assistance to church youth or adults who are preparing to be teachers. Checks should be made payable to the church with “HDW Fund” in the memo.
