U.S. Veteran Robert Roy "Bob" Staggs, 76, of Keyser, WV, formerly of Rawlings, MD, passed away Monday, May 29, 2006 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Born on October 1, 1929 at Cresaptown, MD, he was a son of the late John and Lenora Grace (Iser) Staggs. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean (Kiddy) Staggs on August 25, 1985; a grandson, Craig Allen Lewis; two brothers, John Staggs and Edward Homer Staggs and three sisters, Emma Vincent, Sarah Smith and Mary Flanagan.

Mr. Staggs was retired as a track inspector with first the B & O Railroad and retired from CSX Railroad with over 25 years of service. He was a member of the Sunnyside Church of the Brethren, New Creek, WV, was a US Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict, and was a member of Boyce-Houser Post # 41, American Legion, Keyser, Kelly-Mansfield Post # 52, American Legion, Piedmont, WV and Nancy Hanks Post # 3518, VFW, Keyser. He also was a member of the Fountain Ruritan Club, member and past president of the Mapleshade Farmer's and Sportsmen's Club and served on the Dawson, MD Cemetery Committee. He also served as president of the Staggs Family Reunion Committee.

Surviving are his wife, Carol (McKinney) Wertman Staggs; one son, Robert E. Staggs and wife Cathy of Greencastle, PA; two daughters, Sandra Muller and husband Roland of Manchester, MD and Kathy Flanagan and husband Herbie of McCoole, MD; two stepdaughters, Ronda Wertman and Lori Burns and husband Jon, all of Keyser. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, one of whom was a very special buddy to his Pappy, Justin Wertman and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends were received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Thursday, June 1 from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. The Fountain Ruritan Club conducted a memorial service at the funeral home on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and a combined memorial service by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars was conducted Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday, June 2 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. James "Sonny" Dodds officiating.

Interment was in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills, MD.

The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Robert R. Staggs Memorial Fund, c/o Grant County Bank, P.O. Box 849, Keyser, WV 26726.
