Hugh Alexander Gillis was born in Nova Scotia, Canada to Alexander Gillis and Sarah Nicholson. He grew up in Big Baddeck. Hugh moved to British Columbia in the early 1900's, living in Vancouver. He worked as a Commercial Traveler. In 19? he married Christina McLeod, also from Nova Scotia. Together they had two daughters, both born in San Fransico where the family had moved for a time. Returning to Vancouver, Hugh passed away in 1929.
