On December 25, 2008, the Lord gifted himself with a precious jewel, "Granny." Barbara Joyce McCray was born in Boyce, Louisiana, on August 24, 1934, to the parentage of Ameal Sr. and Eloise Washington.
Barbara was a home-maker. Her passion was taking care of her family and the rearing of other kids. She was loved by many, being admired by her family, church family, neighbors and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Lionell McCray; her parents; and father-in-law Joseph McCray and mother-in-law Corrine Coleman.
Left to cherish her memories are her devoted children Debora McVeigh, Cedric McCray (Ramona); Elton McCray (Glenda), Andrea Robinson (Elliott), Carla Gibson (Marc), Elfina McCray (Raymond Gamble), Renita McCray (Adras Wilturner) and Sheila Wilson (Earl), she also reared, Ellowa Woods and Ty Sowery; her siblings Rosie G. Metoyer (Granvel), Lenora Madison, Olivia Roland (Samuel), Ameal Washington, Jr. (Annie Rose), Rudolph Washington (Norma), Thomas Washington (Cassandra) and Bernard Washington; thirty-one grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, her mother-in-law, Martha McCray; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, her First Baptist Church Family and many friends.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2009, followed by a wake from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Home Going Services will be 12 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009. Both services will be held at First Missionary Baptist Church, 819 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Texas City with Pastor A. L. Bell, officiating. Burial will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock under the direction of Mainland Funeral Home of La Marque.
