Captain Richard "Barry" Eldridge, 78, passed into God's loving arms Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 surrounded by the sounds of his family singing and reading his favorite Scripture passages.

A celebration of his life will be held 5:00 p.m., Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Kalifonsky Christian Center in Kenai, Alaska where he was an Elder. Pastor Steve Toliver will be officiating. There will be a reception following the service. He will be laid to rest at Fort Richardson National Cemetery during a private burial with honors.

Barry was born Aug. 25, 1934 in Boston, Mass. He graduated from Pembroke High School in Pembroke, Mass. Barry went on to earn a BA in mathematics from Tufts University, and an MA in Management from Webster University. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1957 to 1984, attaining the rank of Captain. Barry was a U.S. Merchant Marine Master for over 20 years. He first came to Alaska in 1964, but was to reside in many places throughout his career. Formerly of Duxbury, Mass., he brought his family to Kenai, Alaska in 1985 upon his retirement from the Coast Guard.

Barry was the manager of CIRO/CISPRI from 1985 until 1991 when he became Master and Mate aboard the M/V Reboubt, a self-propelled landing barge operating from Seward to the Inside Passage, Seattle, and Point Hope. In 1996 he began spending his summers in Homer where until 1998 he piloted the Endeavor for Ship to Shore Tours, and later, the Rainbow Connection for Rainbow Tours.

Barry loved flying his Cessna 172, but his greatest love, apart from Jesus and family, was piloting boats. He passed his love for being on the water to all three of his children. Barry loved ice cream, and always recommended "medicinal chocolate ice cream" for anyone who was not feeling well. He enjoyed square dancing, road trips, all types of skiing, and especially his mission trips to Argentina. Given the opportunity, he would have continued the mission trips to Argentina, and desired to go on a mission trip to Australia. Barry was a leader, and a member of the Rotary Club who lived the motto "service above self". A proud citizen of Kenai, he was Commissioner of the City of Kenai Harbor Commission from 1987 to 2012, served on the Kenai City Council, the Planning & Zoning Committee, KPEDD, Cook Inlet RCAC, PROPS, and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was past director of Love, Inc. and the Founding Director of the first Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the State of Alaska.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Virginia Lee. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marta Eldridge of Kenai, AK; son, Richard B. Eldridge II of Davie, FL; son, R. Kevin Eldridge & his wife, Christina of Anchorage, AK; daughter, Sandee K Simons & her husband, Charlie, and their children, Jeffrey and Keziah all of Soldotna, AK; his sister, Charlene Goodrich and her husband, David of MA; nephew, Scott Hagerty and family of NH; niece, LeeAnn Hagerty and family of OH; and nephew, Adam Goodrich and family of MA.

"Thank you Dad for the example you set for me. Through your wisdom, guidance and teaching, you, more than any other, have helped shape me into the man I am today. I love you and miss you," Rick. "Papa had a firm hand, but it was a loving and kind one," Jeffrey. "Papa was a good tickler," Keziah. When the time came, he helped us out into the world, gently guiding and supporting, and always loving. He made his opinions known, but left us free to make our own decisions, and find our own way. We love you Dad and look forward to seeing you in heaven.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kenai Community Foundation, 125 N Willow St. Kenai, AK 99611.
