William was the son of Rev. James Berry Cosper. The Rev. was a native of Edgefield S.C. and Sarah H. Dejournett, born in the same county.

William was struck by lightning while standing on his front porch. After a period of recovery he was struck again inside his house, this strike being fatal.
He was laid to rest in this cemetery where sometime later his headstone was hit and destroyed by lightning. His family replaced this marker which was again hit by lightning. This marker lies in pieces today due to the family's inability to replace it again.
