Joseph "Clayton" Clark, 90, longtime resident of RR 2 Sayre and Athens, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, after a period of declining health.

He was born Jan. 8, 1912 in Susquehanna, Pa., to Joseph C. and Ceilia Clark.

He attended schools in Susquehanna and Sayre.

Clayton worked at the Athens Silk Mill and 30 years at Ingersoll-Rand as a gear shaper when he retired early because of severe arthritis.

On Oct. 8, 1938, he married L. Jean McEwen of Waverly, N.Y.

Clayton was a Boy Scout leader at the Sayre Christian Church, Troop No. 18, for several years, taking the Scouts on trips to Canada and the National Jamboree. He was a lifelong member of the Sayre Christian Church, Keystone Avenue, Sayre, serving as an Elder. He was a 52-year member of Rural Amity Lodge No. 70 F&AM of Athens; Past High Priest of Amity Royal Arch Chapter No. 293, Athens; Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Northern Council No. 24, Athens; Past Commander of Northern Commandery No. 16, Towanda; member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Towanda; and a member of Consistory Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Towanda.

He loved to fish, hunt and travel. He was an avid gardener and grew a varied assortment of vegetables for consumption and canning.

He is survived by: his wife of 64 years, L. Jean Clark, at home in Athens; son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Helen (Scribner) Clark of Roanoke, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Lawrence G. Chamberlain Jr. of Athens; sisters, Joyce Lord of Sayre and Opal and John Seber of Meadville, Pa.; brother, Ellsworth Hall of Florida; grandchildren and their spouses, Lorraine and Chuck Reynolds of Factoryville, Pa., Debra Hegadus, Joe Clark and Scott Clark, all of Scranton, James and Susan Williams of Milford, Conn., William Clayton Williams, Timothy Chamberlain of Athens, Jackie and Mark Stukey and Jeff Scribner, both of Roanoke, Greg Scribner of Knoxville, Tenn., and Laura Chamberlain of Mission Hills, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Megan, Samantha, Madison and Marissa Scribner, Armaund Urquidez, Hunter Reynolds and Felixander Kellogg-Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by: stepmother, Jessie (Hoffmeier) Clark; son, J. Fredrick Clark; daughter-in-law, Delores Clark; two grandsons, Baby Boy Clark and Robert Hegadus Jr.; brother-in-law, Wesley Lord; and special Uncle Albert Clark and Aunt Minnie Briscoe.

Family and friends may call Thursday, Oct. 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens.

Funeral and committal services will be held Friday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with his pastor, the Rev. James Donahoo, officiating.

Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Sayre Christian Church, 427 S. Keystone Ave., Sayre, PA 18840.
