Helena was born in Hjoring, Denmark. She was the daughter of Christen Nielsen (1832-1907) and Christine Marie Christoffson Nielson (1829-1905). She came to Utah with her parents in 1864, she was 4 years old when she arrived.

Helena married Albert Richins. Their children were: Vilettie Helena Richins Smith Loveridge (1878-1927 or 1957), Albert C. Richins (1879-1953), Thomas Henry Richins (1881-1963), James Arnold Richins or James O. Richins (1884-1907), Harriet Ann Richins McCarrell (1887-1973), Frederick John Richins (1890-1960), Hazel Augusta Richins Hunting (1891-1963), Ervin Orson Richins (1893-1960), Pearl Frances Richins Hollenbeck (1896-1959).
