Margaret was born in New York to Ebenezer and Margaret Rowland on July 25, 1812. She married Robert Housten McLaury and they moved to Merideth, N.Y. In 1855 they moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa. During their stay in Iowa, they changed their name from McLaury to McClaury. Her husband Robert was a lawyer and farmer. In 1859, Margaret died of typhoid fever and was buried at Wright Cemetery in Belle Plaine, Iowa.

Margaret had many children. Her son Edmond fought for the Union in the Civil War and is buried next to Margaret. Two of Margaret's sons (Tom and Frank McLaury) died at the gun fight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. Margaret's husband remarried and moved to Hazelton, Iowa. After Margaret's death, some family members took back the surname of McLaury. Margaret's husband and his new wife moved to Hazelton, Iowa, where he died July 7, 1893. He is buried at Fontana Cemetery in Hazelton, Iowa.
