From the Ojai Valley News, Friday, January 23, 2009:

A beloved father and town veterinarian, Dr. Robert Peter Bendorf passed in his son Barend Bendorf's arms, with his grandchildren, and Alexandra Bendorf and Maria Lucas at his side in Ventura Community Memorial Hospital on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 10:42 p.m.

Dr. Bendorf was born January 23, 1924 in Fabiola Hospital, Oakland, California. His parents were Garnet Bendorf and Alice Smalley Bendorf. His deceased sister was named Kathryn Garnette Bendorf.

Dr. Bendorf attended Glenview Grammar School, Lakeview Grammar School, Montclair Grammar School, then completed Claremont Junior High School in Oakland, California.

Dr. Bendorf served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 during World War II, in the Medical Department as a Staff Sergeant. After being decorated and given a honorable discharge he used the GI Bill to attend college.

He received a B.A. at the University of California at Berkeley, and then received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M license 2103) from Iowa State University in Ames in 1953.

He married Carolyn Tyler in 1950; they divorced in 1953. He married Patricia Elizabeth Dalton in 1959; they were divorced in 1978.

Dr. Bendorf was an avid volleyball player in his youth, an excellent snow skier, loved Yosemite and the Sierras, swimming, was a musician, sang in the Ojai United Methodist Church Choir for over 37 years, played in the Bell Choir and was one of the best duplicate bridge players in the state.

Dr. Bendorf enjoyed the outdoors, started/funded the Ojai Humane Society with Claire Ladigan, started the pet emergency clinics with other veterinarians, allowing veterinarians to spend more weekends with their families.

Dr. Bendorf was president of the Ventura-Santa Barbara Veterinary Association, president of Ventura Contract Bridge Unit, sang in Los Cancion-eros Palos Verdes Choir, and sang in the Orange County Master Chorale.

Dr. Bendorf's veterinary practice started in Lafayette (1954-58), Torrance (1958-62), and he founded the Ojai Pet Hospital in 1962. He retired in 1985.

Dr. Bendorf was well known and a major figure in the Ojai Valley for his extraordinary veterinary care, and compassion for animals and ability to give charity when needed. His long laugh and twisted sense of humor will remain with this entire town forever.

From staying up all night to save a dog hit by a car, from some stranger on Highway 33 with no money, to skiing down Mammoth Mountain in German lederhosen with an accordion laughing, he truly lived life to its fullest and included all of us.

Dr. Bendorf's contributions and love of Ojai will never be surpassed. He told his son that when he arrived in Ojai you could shoot a rifle down Ojai Avenue and not hit a soul but a person out on a bridge by Soule Park looking for some imaginary steelhead military fish that never existed.

Months before he passed, he told his son that in Ojai today he never had enough time or food to make the drive through the traffic to the bridge at Soule Park to see if the guy was still looking for the imaginary fish off the bridge. Although he had heard they were building some multi-million dollar special bridge so more people could stand around looking for the imaginary fish too.

Dr. Bendorf wishes to tell everyone thank you; to his clients, staff, friends, family and for all the love and opportunities that this Ojai Valley has given him.

In lieu of flowers, people may make donations to the Ojai United Methodist Church, 120 Church Road, Ojai, CA 93023, to insure that others can continue to enjoy the loving fellowship and spiritual guidance of the church.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 24. at 11:00 a.m. at the Ojai United Methodist Church with a light lunch in the fellowship hall following where everyone can meet and celebrate his life.
