She was born at Erie, Minnesota, the daughter of Carl Otto and Eva (Payne) Elg. She attended school in Erie through the 8th grade and then went to Goodridge for one year before moving to Bemidji where she graduated from high school. She lived and helped her family on the farm until she was married Oct 18, 1936 in Brainerd to Earl Rhine Hanson. His job with REA took them to many locations in Minnesota, Iowa, South and North Dakota, before they returned to Bemidji in 1945. She worked eight years at Woolworth's in Bemidji and lived in their home on Sherman Drive for 45 years before moving into the Northview Manor Apartments.
