Melchizedic was bonded out to Hardford Taylor May term 1801, as a bondservant age 16. He left Rockingham Co. NC at age 18 and went to Christian co. KY. in 1799. Married Catharine Suddith and loaded their belongings into a wagon and went to Callaway Co. Mo. They had $13 dollars when they started and arrived with .50cents. Mel rented some land and with hard work he was able to enter land and obtain his home. the Covingtons raised 13 children. Many years before he died he paid taxes on $10,000 worth of property. Mr Covington died at the age of 86yrs.
His last words were "Lord have mercy."
