ALLEN E. FOSTER DIES, PROMINENT CITY NATIVE.

GUILFORD. Allen Evarts Foster, a Yale College graduate, who practiced law in New York City for over 50 years, will be buried in New Haven after funeral services Wednesday. Mr. Foster, 84, died Sunday at his home on Clapboard Hill Road.

He was born in New Haven, Feb. 18, 1885, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John P.C. Foster. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, graduated from Yale University in 1906, and obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1909. In World War I, he served as captain of a machine gun battalion in France.

Mr. Foster practiced law with Lord, Day and Lord, 25 Broadway, New York City, from 1910 until his retirement as senior partner several years ago. Specializing in trusts and estates, he became a partner in the firm in 1919.

He was a former president of the Municipal Art Commission and long a leader in work for underprivileged children in New York City. He was a fellow of Branford College, a member of the American Bar Association, the New York Historical Society and the Morgan Library in New York City.

Mr. Foster, a collector of prints, etchings and books, was an honorary trustee of the Yale Libray Associates. He recently presented his collection of the etchings of Johann Bartold Jongking, a Dutch artist, to the university. He wrote "A Checklist of Illustrations by Winslow Homer," and was a member of the Art Commission of the City of New York from 1948 to 1957, and was its president from 1954 to 1957.

He was also a member of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, Yale of New York, Elihu University, Church, Grolier, Century Association, Downtown Association and the Anglers of New York.

He served as a trustee of the Sheltering Arms Children's Service in New York City from 1919 to 1959, of Kips Bay Boy's Club from 1919 until his death, and of Berea College, Ky., from 1943 to 1963.

Mr. Foster leaves a sister, Miss Josephine Foster of New Haven.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday morning at 11 in Christ Episcopal Church, Guilford. Burial will be in Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven. The Leete Funeral Hone, 98 Fair St., Guilford, is in charge of arrangements.

Enlisted, December 28, 1911, in Troop 4, 1st Cavalry ( Squadron A ), NYNG, at the Madison Avenue Armory, New York City. His Troop reorganized, June 29, 1915, into Troop D, Squadron A Cavalry.

Squadron A was called for service on the Mexican border and mustered in for service June 30, 1916. The Squadron was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas as part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division ). The Squadron returned to New York, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916. He was now a sergeant.

World War 1, he attended ORC at Plattsburg Barracks and appointed a 1st Lieutenant, June 15, 1917 and promoted Captain August 11, 1918. He was first assigned to the 305th Machine Gun Battalion, 77th Division. He saw heavy combat with the 77th Division and returned to the States, August 11, 1918.

After his return to the States he was assigned to the 43rd Machine Gun Battalion at Camp Logan, Texas. He was discharged as a Captain, December 18, 1918.

World War 2, he served as a Captain in the 4th Regiment, NYG.

Post World War, he was the treasurer of the Squadron A Association 1939 - 1943
