Schmidt was born May 8, 1898,
at Hanover, Alta. Her parents
were Jacob Schmidt C.D.S.
Teacher at St. John's, Hanover
congregation for 44 years, and
Marie Caroline Wehking, sister
of Pastor Wehking at Hanover.
A week after her birth, on May
15, 1898, she became a child of
God through the rite of Holy
Baptism with her uncle, Pastor
H. Wehking officiating. She
received her religious training
from her father in the Christian
Day School at St. John's
congregation and instruction in
preparation for her confirmation
on March 31, 1912, by her
uncle. The Scripture given to
her as a comfort through life
was recorded in Isaiah 54:10,
"for the mountains shall depart
and the hills removed, but my
kindness shall not depart from,
thee, neither shall the covenant
of my peace be removed, saith
the Lord that has mercy on
thee."
After attending Des Moines
College, Iowa State Teachers
College at Cedar Falls, and
Concordia Teachers College at
River Forest, Illinois, where she
obtained her Bachelors Degree,
Paula taught in the public
schools of Maple Valley
Township and Cherokee County
for seven years, after which she
followed in the footsteps of her
father and became a Christian
Day School Teacher for 37
years. Commencing in the
Branch School at Hanover, she
taught in various congregations,
devoting the longest time of
service to the congregation at
Hinsdale, Illinois, a suburb of
Chicago. Paula terminated her
teaching career at St. Mark's
Lutheran Congregation,
Houston, Texas in 1966. In
retirement she lived with her
father and sister at 801
Greenwood, Storm Lake,
joining Grace Lutheran Church.
The Lord granted a pleasant
environment and many
opportunities for service to the
Lord in various capacities — as
organist, choir director, S.S.
teacher and Supervisor of a
large S.S. department, instructor
of Sunday School teachers,
V.B.C. teacher, and follow-up
person for an enrollment of
about 400 children. She was
also an active member of the
Storm Lake Chapter of Seward
Concordia Guild, serving as
chairperson, secretary, and
treasurer respectively. Among
other services rendered Grace,
Paula organized a Home Bible
Study Group in 1967 and helped
organize the Dorcas Society.
The Lord called Paula home
to her eternal reward on
Tuesday, February 3, 2004,
while she resided at the
Methodist Manor in Storm
Lake. Preceding her in death
were her infant sister Mathilde,
her 55-year-old mother, her
103-year-old father, and her
sister Elda who was age 74.
Paula was 105 years old.
