Cody was born on June 28, 1924 at Little Birch, WV a son of the late Lon and Vicie Jackson James.
He graduated from Sutton High School where he met and later married, (on April 10, 1947), Kathleen Bright of Newville, WV. After a medical discharge from the US Army, he worked as a first-class machinist for Glen L Martin in Baltimore, MD. He then was a salesman for the Firestone Company and later a top salesman for Electolux before returning to WV.
Upon returning to Newville, he took over his father's store and later retired as Postmaster after 27 years of service with the postal service. He was a past member of the Democratic Executive Committee and was named "Democratic Citizen of the Year" in 2002
Cody was always trying to help. When the church they attended began leaning down the hill and snow blew in the windows, Cody decided to repair it with the help of Lynn Showalter, Bill Morrison and Percy Luzader. They kept the fires burning for the congregation through the winter. He was secretary and treasurer of Newville Cemetery for 46 years and was instrumental in forming the perpetual trust fund for the cemetery. He loved to sing gospel music with his cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pauline Mowery.
