Leonard was the son of Morris and Lydia M.(or Mary) Mayott. The family immigrated to the United States shortly after his birth, and settled in Montpelier, Vermont.

Leonard served as a Private in Company G., 4th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers during the Civil War. He enlisted on September 4, 1861 and mustered in on the 21st. On September 14, 1862, he was wounded at Crampton's Gap, Maryland. A bullet wound in his left leg affected him for the rest of his life. He was discharged on March 29, 1863.

After the war, Leonard worked as a blacksmith. He married Lucy Drugg in 1869. He was working in Woodbury, Vermont when their daughter was born.

Leonard married Berilla Jennings on November 30, 1893.

Leonard was a member of James M. Warner Post, Grand Army of the Republic, and was a member of the Masons.
