Jodie Ray Gary was born to Rev. John Willie Gary and Sallie Ida Downing on August 31, 1913, in Texas.

He had nine siblings: Dollie Marie Gary (Tatum), Tabatha Pauline Gary (Cole), Maudie Dean "Maudine" Gary, Willie Bell Gary (Burcham), John Cornell "JC" Gary Melvin Cleo Gary, Thelma Gary (Wolfe), William Thomas "Bill" Gary, and Claudius "Claudy" Gary.

Jodie was married a total of five times. His first marriage to Evelyn (maiden name unknown) last only a couple of weeks and produced no children.

Presumably somewhere between 1932 and 1934, Jodie married Dell Elizabeth "Emma" Guice. Together, they had one son: Junior Ray Gary. The date of their divorce is unknown at this time, though it may have been before 1940-- when Jodie enlisted in the US Army National Guard on November 25, 1940, he is noted as single without dependents.

About 1943, Jodie married Mabel Irene Beaty. Together, they had two sons: Charles Ray Gary and Don Eugene Gary. His wife and infant son, Don, both died in October 1945 shortly after he was born. He and his mother were buried together at Greenville Cemetery in Mississippi.

Sometime between 1945 and 1948, Jodie married Linda Weeks. This union produced no children. The date of their divorce is unknown at this time.

Finally, on January 17, 1949, Jodie married Pauline Lott. Pauline brought one son, Billy Gene Lott, to the marriage. He was raised as one of Jodie's sons; he was the only father Billy ever knew. As well, because he was so young when his mother passed, Jodie's son Charles Ray was brought into the marriage. He and Billy were just about a month apart in age and were raised as brothers. Together, Jodie and Pauline had five additional children: Jodie Lavelle Gary, Glen Edward Gary, Rebecca Pauline "Becky" Gary, Joyce Darlene Gary (Lee), and Fred Laverne Gary.

On February 19, 1963, Jodie passed away at the age of 49 in the Shreveport Veteran's Hospital after a long illness. He was buried at Greenville Cemetery in Greenville, Mississippi.
