Raymond was the last of six children born to Whit & Edna Bowden. He attended Norview High School, Norfolk, VA where he was the senior class president. He attended UVA and the Old Dominion campus of The College of William and Mary. He worked for Bekins Van Lines and Lincoln National Life Insurance Company where he eventually managed the Jacksonville, FL office.
