US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Duane Lavern Woods entered the Marine Corps 5 July, 1944 from Red Oak, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 10th Recruit Training Battalion, MB Parris Island, SC. Assigned advanced training in the 9th Training Battalion, Infantry Training Regiment, Camp Lejuene, NC. 23 October, 1944 assigned to 34th Replacement Draft moved across the country by train to Camp Loma Linda, CA. Embarked Naval Vessel at San Diego for movement overseas to Guam where the 34th Replacement Draft was attached to the 3rd Marine Division.

19 February, 1945 part of the off shore reinforcements D-Day at Iwo Jima boated to replace casualties. Landed during the battle and assigned as an infantry replacement in HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Participated in combat operations until Wounded in Action and evacuated to US Naval Hospital in Guam.

Died of Wounds 11 March, 1945.

Next of Kin: Wife, Mrs Duane L Woods, Route 4, Box 168, Red Oak, Iowa. Parents, Mr William E and Mrs Dorothy J Woods.

Initially buried in USAF Cemetery Guam # 2 Agat, Guam

1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Gomer Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa.
