Mr. Gerber died Monday, Sept. 13, at his home.
He was born Oct. 27, 1886, in Menomonie, Wis., and married Agnes Egan in Chippewa Falls, Wis., in 1913. She preceded him in death in 1954. In December of 1955 he married Rose Ellen Doyle in Aberdeen.
He graduated from Stout Institute in 1909, and received his bachelor's degree in education from Northern State College in 1935, and also attended the University of Minnesota.
He taught school in Stanley, Wis., before coming to Aberdeen in 1913 as a professor of industrial arts. He became head of the department of industrial arts education in 1924. In 1940 he was appointed chairman of the combined division of fine and industrial arts. He taught continuously at NSC from 1913 until his retirement in 1956, except for a year spent with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Assn., as activities director of a refugee camp in Italy in 1944-45.
He served as advisor to the Pakistan Technical Education Program in 1956 and had been a judge at Dearborn, Mich., for the Ford Motor Company's craftsman fair. In 1969 he was honored by the South Dakota Industrial Arts Assn.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Retired Teachers Assn., a former member of Knights of Columbus, SDEA, NEA, American Federation of Teachers, Masquers Club, Industrial Arts Club, Scritzmeier Club, Wisconsin National Guard, Moose Lodge, Woodmen of America and a former director of the Aberdeen Home Building and Loan Assn.
Survivors include his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur L. (Pauline) Davies, Aberdeen; six sons, Dr. James J. Gerber, Modesto, Calif.; Robert, Newport Beach, Calif.; Dr. Philip L. Gerber, Brockport, N.Y.; Thomas, White Plains, N.Y.; Dr. Bernard Gerber, Aberdeen, and Dr. Edward Gerber, Carmichael, Calif.; 36 grandchildren and one great grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Robert (Louise) Mortimer, River Falls, Wis.
He was preceded in death by one daughter and one son.
A wake scripture service will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Huebl Funeral Chapel.
Friends may call at the chapel from Tuesday afternoon until 9 a.m. Thursday.
The family would prefer memorials to the "H.P. Gerber Scholarship Fund" at Northern State College.
