GOSHEN -- Jonathan H. Hoke, 71, of 3109 Mallard Lane, died at 4:37 p.m. Tuesday (March 7, 2006) at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, where he had been a patient for six days. He had been in failing health for two years.

He was born March 8, 1934, in Elkhart, to Clarence M. and Leona (Rhinesmith) Hoke and was a lifetime area resident. On Dec. 25, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bristol, he married the former Elizabeth Miller. She died July 10, 1976. He then married Carol Wiebe on Dec. 30, 1983, at Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, South Bend.
She survives, along with Jon (Teresa) Hoke of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Joann (Don) Cramer and Joni (Jim) Bradberry, both of Goshen, and Jennifer Snyder of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethlyn Riley of Goshen and Nadine (Tom) Corse of South Bend.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Robbie Snyder, and one sister, Carolyn Mary Hoke.

Friends called before the 3:30 p.m. Saturday funeral service, all at College Mennonite Church, Goshen. Pastor Klaudia Smucker officiated. Burial is in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Bristol. Military graveside services were conducted.

Mr. Hoke was a lifetime member of the National Management Association, Allied Signal Employees Association, Amateur Radio Relay League, Elkhart County RACES, Elkhart County Radio Association and Elkhart County Emergency Service SKYWARN. He had been an FCC-licensed (extra class) K9HYU radio operator since 1956, deputy director of Elkhart County Emergency Management Department from 2002 to 2004 and was a member of the American Legion, National Army Security Agency Association, Association of Former Intelligence Officers and College Mennonite Church.
Mr. Hoke was a 1953 graduate of Concord High School and served for three years in the Indiana National Guard. He began working as a draftsman at the Bendix missile section and also attended Indiana University South Bend. He then joined the Army Security Agency and was stationed in Frankfort/Nuremberg, spent time on the U.S. east coast and was stationed for 19 months at Herzo Base, a U.S. intercept station.

Mr. Hoke returned to work at the Bendix Missile Division and also worked in the electronics department of Bendix. He was a member and master of Zion Grange 2189, Bristol, and joined the Osolo Township Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter before becoming director of Osolo Emergency Medical Services.

Memorials may be given to the Mennonite Central Committee or Heifer International.
