Mrs. Hannah A. Austin died in Putney last Saturday. She was the daughter of Chester and Abigail Taft of Townshend and was born December 6, 1824. She spent her early life at the home of her parents on a farm in the southeast part of the town, and attended the public schools of this place. She was married to Riley H. Austin in Townshend on Dec. 9, 1844, by the Rev. Horace Fletcher, D. D. Of this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters. One daughter, Mary was burned to death many years ago at the age of 16 years; the rest are all living, Albert A. of Brookline, Charles L. of Townshend, Fred A. of Putney, Miss Martha J. of Putney and Mrs. Mary M., wife of Irving Grout of Arlington, all of whom were present at the funeral. Mrs. Austin spent her married life until after the death of her husband, which occurred April 2, 1886, on a farm included now in the place occupied by George White.
At the time of her death she was the oldest member of the Townshend Baptist church, having been baptized into its fellowship by Dr. Fletcher in October, 1853.
She was consistent and exemplary in her church life, a kind and obliging neighbor, of tender feeling having a heart which beat in sympathy with every sufferer, an affectionate wife and a loving mother. Her heart was large, in the world she was the fiend of all and the enemy of none.
Beside her sons and daughters she leaves 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The funeral was held in the Baptist church of this place on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The pastor, Rev. Joseph McKean, officiated, assisted by Rev. H. S. McHale of Brookline. A choir consisting of Homer J. Heath, R. D. Phillips, Mrs. W. H. Miles, Mrs. Clara Blanchard and Miss Cora Mason sang "Only remembers for what we have done" and "The Christian's goodnight," Mrs. R. D. Phillips was the organist. There were beautiful floral tributes. The body was placed in the receiving tomb and will later be buried in the family lot in the cemetery near her former home.
