From the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Thursday, January 30, 1969, page 1:
  Sgt. E-5 Romand Gale (Duke) Mason Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Roman II Mason of Route 1, Edwardsville, has been killed in action in Vietnam.
  Sgt. Mason was killed Monday, Jan. 27, according to a report from U.S. Army officials.
  Sgt. Mason entered the Army in September of 1967. He took basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and advanced infantry training at Fort Gordon, Ga.
  He was graduated from paratroopers' school in April, 1968, at Fort Benning, Ga., and left for Vietnam last May 10.
  Sgt. Mason attended South Roxana Elementary School and was graduated from Roxana High School.
  Survivors, in addition to his parents, are a brother, Mike, of the home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. August Determan of Edwardsville, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Irene Wisnasky, also of Edwardsville.
  Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending word from Army officials.

  Funeral services for Sgt. E-5 Roman Gale (Duke) Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roman II Mason of Route 1, Edwardsville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Assembly of God Church in South Roxana.
  Sgt. Mason was killed Jan. 27 in action in Vietnam. He was a paratrooper.
  Friends may call at Marks Funeral Home in Wood River. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwardsville.
  Sgt. Mason was born Sept. 23, 1947, in Edwardsville, where he lived most of his life.
  He was employed at Olin Mathieson in East Alton before entering the service in September, 1967.
  He was graduated from Roxana High School and was a member of the Assembly of God in South Roxana.
  Survivors include his parents; a brother, Mike, of the home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. August Determan of Edwardsville, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wisnasky of Edwardsville.
