The current focus of this memorial is of Hannah, the mother of Rev. Joseph Fowler, for 20 years the 2nd pastor of the East Haddam, Conn. First Congregational Church. Historically it is claimed that Rev. Fowler's parents were Jonathan Fowler and Hannah Clark, ostensibly of Milford, Conn., which is not possible. This due to either a misreading of or lack of knowledge regarding the "Genealogical Memoir" of the Capt. William Fowler family of New Haven, Conn. first published in 1870 and republished in 1905 by a recognized Ohio-based historical society.
More recently it is claimed that Rev. Joseph was one and the same as the son of Joseph Fowler and Elizabeth Buck of Guilford, Conn., b. of record at Guilford, which is also not possible. While Rev. Joseph Fowler is called Joseph Fowler "Jr." in both the Lebanon and East Haddam vital records, his generation designation was not for purposes of identifying his father, rather that he was the youngest of two Joseph Fowler's residing at the same time at Lebanon and East Haddam. The elder Joseph Fowler was Rev. Joseph's childless uncle, Col. Joseph Fowler, Esq., who raised him.
On Apr. 13, 1715 of record at Suffield, Mass. (now Suffield, Conn.), Hannah Smith m. 1) Joseph Barber, s. of John Barber, Jr. and Joanna Miller, b. per the Suffield vital records Feb 18, 1689, which more likely is Feb. 18, 1689/90. He d. of record Dec. 15, 1715, only 10-months after marriage. There is no recorded child of the marriage. In the same records, Joseph Barber's two-year older brother John Barber m. in 1714 Sarah Smith, whose father is claimed to have been Ebenezer Smith. Whether Sarah Smith and Hannah Smith were sisters cannot be confirmed by the available records.
On Jan. 7, 1719/20 of record at Suffield, Mass., Hannah as the widow Barber m. Jonathan Fowler, s. of Jonathan Fowler and Elizabeth Reynolds (q.v. Renalls), b. May 20, 1696 at Norwich, Conn. He d. Oct. 15, 1756 at Coventry, Conn. They had 11 children, who are outlined in their father's memorial.
