Zachary R. Ortiz was born in Albuquerque in 1927 was welcomed into heaven on July 29, 2013 by his mother, Dorothy Bottger-Ortiz, earth mother, Lola Ortiz, his father, Zachary Ortiz Sr. and brothers, Charles, Arthur and Tommy. Zachary was a devoted husband and father who spent his life giving to others and cultivating love. Zachary will be remembered for his smiles, his humor, his love of building, fixing things, planting trees and flying. Zachary was an accomplished pilot, flying for the Civil Air Patrol and instructing others in the art of aviation. Zachary was a gentle soul who lived out his faith in God and others by his words and actions, cultivating a life of prayer and devotion. Zachary proudly served his country while in the United States Navy during World War II and Korea, as well as his 46 years working for Sandia National Labs. Zachary worked tirelessly for his family, and his legacy survives in them and all who were privileged to know him. The family wishes to thank Hospice de la Luz for their loving care. Zachary is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bernice Ortiz, brothers, Ron Ortiz and Paul Ortiz, sister, Dolores Lee, daughters, Margaret Baron (Ephraim) and Carla Sweet (Larry), sons, Zachary Ortiz Jr. (Anita), Clyde Ortiz and Gary Ortiz (Sue Picco), his grandchildren, Jennifer Torrez, Christopher Ortiz, Andrea and Matthew Baron, Ashley and Shannon Sweet, Lindsay and Zachary Ortiz III and great-granddaughter, Oceana Ortiz.
Rosary to take place on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Ascension Catholic Church, 2150 Raymac Rd. SW and Funeral Mass on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., also at Ascension Catholic Church. Burial to follow at Pajarito Cemetery.
