John served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24E #41-28545, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.
John died in the "Line Of Duty" while on a combat training flight from Westover Field, when he was obliged by mechanical failure in his plane to choose between "abandoning ship" and making a forced landing, under very difficult conditions, at Rentschler Field, Connecticut, a small field not intended for bombers.
He chose the latter course, radioed for crash trucks and other emergency equipment, and, by the skill with which he handled his plane, managed to save all lives but his own. He himself was instantly killed during the war.
