Colleen Ellen Dhoore Holmes, 64, of Massanutten, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at her residence. Ms. Holmes was born on Nov. 26, 1945, in South Bend, Ind., and was a daughter of the late Earl and surviving Shirley Listek Dhoore. Colleen's long career as an import & export administrator included work in the Washington, D.C., area, and locally for Wampler Foods, now known as Pilgrims Pride, until her retirement. She managed Gold and Gifts in the Valley Mall for several years. Colleen had a big heart and was well known as an animal and bird lover. She bred and raised many exotic birds. In addition to her mother, Ms. Holmes is survived by a son, Daryl Zernick, of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Greg Dhoore, of South Bend, Ind.; two sisters, Judy Poelvoorde, of South Bend, Ind., and Jan Sowers, of Memphis, Tenn.; several aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews. Colleen had many friends from Hawaii to the Tidewater area of Virginia. She will be especially missed by her local friends, Bobbie Rae Monger, Louise Ward and her neighbor of 17 years, Lauren Jones; and by her "Little sisters", Alicia and Carmella Perez; and two birds, Ruffles and Johnny Reb. A graveside service will be held at Cross Keys Cemetery 11 a.m. on March 11, 2010. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisonburg-Rockingham S.P.C.A., P.O.
