Actor. He was an American stage and film actor who had a long career spanning from 1914 to 1952. For ten years, he was a star of the American silent cinema, becoming one of the highest-paid actors of the era. His success in the silent film era ended in 1924 with an injury on the set. Born the son of actors, his parents trained him and his two brothers in acting. He made his debut at the age of 10 in Richmond, Virginia, in a production of "Julius Caesar" starring Edwin Booth. His first Broadway appearance was in 1896. His first major stage success was in the title role in "Ben Hur," which he toured for five years. He received in 1960 a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He married three times and had one child. As the talkie films began, his roles were minor and at time uncredited, yet he always found work appearing in a total of at least 175 films. His last film role was the king in "Jack and the Beanstalk" in 1952.
