He served in the Civil War, enlisting for the first time at 18 into 12th VT INF. He mustered out in July 1863. He enlisted for the second time five months later into 8th VT INF. He mustered out in June 1865.

An Act To pension Gratia H. Martin. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to place on the pension roll the name of Gratia H. Martin, dependent mother of Carlos Martin, late of Company D, Twelfth Regiment of Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and of Company C, Eighth Regiment of Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and pay her a pension at the rate of twelve dollars a month. Approved, May 7, 1898. May 1, 1898.
