WYNNE, Ruth Ley Cooper Wynne's soul took flight on Saturday night February 21, 2009. She was born in Tampa in 1920 and lived her entire life in our city by the bay except for a brief time in Sarasota as a young child. Born a twin to Edward Dodd Cooper and Lillian Ruth Ley, she was a tiny 2-½ pound baby. Surviving that premature birth was a testament to the strength and passion with which she would live her life. Her twin Mary Bell Cooper only lived a few days. Growing up in Hyde Park, Ruth attended Gorrie Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Junior High, and H.B. Plant High School. She was active in sports, social activities, and cheerleading. Her family was quite involved in the formation of Tampa as her great grandfather was a circuit rider who founded the first Methodist community in Tampa at the time when Florida was a still a territory. After high school, Ruth matriculated to Florida Southern College in Lakeland where she pledged Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After marrying Oscar Boyd Wynne, Jr. in December, 1941, she transferred to the University of Tampa. Ruth and Boyd had 4 active sons. Their house was the lively, happening place in their neighborhood. Educated as a teacher, Ruth taught for the Hillsborough County School system and then, moved to St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School where she taught for 20 years. Ruth was known for her skillful teaching, the high expectations she set for students, and the love and intellect she passed on to her pupils. Ruth and Boyd were married for more than 52 years. As a happy couple Ruth and Boyd were members of the United Methodist Church, Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, Tampa Yacht & Country Club, the Tower Club, and Waynesville Country Club in North Carolina. Ruth is survived by her sons and their families: Boyd and Jan Wynne of Tampa; Lesley and Gail Wynne of Waynesville, NC; Ed Wynne and his partner John Payne of Dallas, TX; Norman and Patsy Wynne of LaGrange, GA; and her sister Mary Virginia Cox of Tampa. Six grandchildren: Boe Wynne of Ft. Bragg, NC; Clay and Patti Wynne Thomas of Tampa, April Ley Scialabba of Tampa, Ley and Becky Wynne, Dodd and Brittany Wynne of Atlanta, and Chris and Lucy Wynne of Atlanta, GA. Also, Ruth leaves 7 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to St. John's Parish Day School in memory of Ruth C. Wynne, 902 S. Orleans, Tampa, FL, 33606 or the charity of your choice. Family will receive friends at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Ave, on Tuesday from 5-7:00 PM. A funeral service will be on Wednesday, February 25, 2:00 PM at Hyde Park United Methodist Church, 500 W. Platt St. Private interment will follow.
