Loula was the daughter of Mathias L and Laura J Widby (born 1857 Tennessee). She married John Spencer in July of 1903. They were the parents of Lucile Emily and Margaret. Loula is the grand daughter of Capt Samuel E. Northington and Sarah Needham Northington.

Contributed by Rich - She was born on July 9, 1880 in Mountain City, Tenn., to Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Widby. When she was very young, her parents moved to Emporia, Kan. where they operated a grocery store. She was the eldest of three children and educated in the Emporia public school system including a year at Kansas State Normal.

In July of 1903, she married John M. Spencer of Emporia. The couple moved from Emporia to Sioux City where their two daughters Lucile and Margaret were born. During World War II, she began working for the Sioux City Gas and Electric Co. (now known as IPS) where she did office and sales work. She demonstrated to housewives how to use the gas stove, which was then coming into common use. While working and raising her daughters, she also made a home for her mother-in-law and later her aging parents.

After working many years for IPS, she retired and moved with her mother to Newell. Following her mother's death, she moved to the house her son-in-law and daughter, Orville and Margaret Rogers, built for her. She filled her retirement years with many interesting hobbies including contract bridge, card games, crossword puzzles, reading and television. She was still playing contract bridge weekly at the age of 103.

In October of 1985, she was confined in a hospital for the first time in her life. Following a good recovery, she was moved to the Newell Good Samaritan Center. Returning problems caused her death. She was a member if the First Congregational Church in Newell.

She was preceded in death by her husband John; daughter Lucile Martens; her parents; her sister Emily and her brother William.

Survivors include a daughter Margaret Rogers; a granddaughter and three great-granddaughters including Linda Miller and her husband David of Storm Lake and many
nieces and nephews.
