He lived there until he moved with his parents to Montana. Darrell served in the US Army as a young adult but was primarily a lifelong musician. He was a fiddler who played in the local dance bands most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, a baby brother, Edwin; brothers Glen and Boyd Burdett Hayes; and a sister Neva Elaine Crawford. Survivors include his sisters Sally Hubbard (Casey, IA) and Genevieve Kimmen (Adair, IA); a sister-in-law, Delores A. Hayes; nieces Katherine Dawson and Nelda Hayes (St. Ignatius), Sheila Hadley (Polson) and Debra Woodward (Missoula); and several other nieces and nephews.
