John Bowman McDaniels

  • Birth 2 Dec 1784 New Egypt, Ocean County, New Jersey, USA
  • Death 19 Aug 1829 Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Burial Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Memorial ID 114576063

Son of William and Hannah McDaniel of New Jersey.

Records differ on whether the family surname was McDaniel or McDaniels but records or usages within the family seem to have used McDaniel most.

This John was the husband of Hannah Ashton McDaniel of Philadelphia PA. She died at Germantown PA, 13 Nov. 1856, but her burial location is not yet confirmed. (Based on other family burial patterns, it is likeliest that she is buried in North Cedar Hill, where her sister and one son are, or Kensington Union, where other children or grandchildren are.) Hannah's sister was Sarah Ashton Walton (memorial # 167102910).

His birth date is from family records. His death data, matching family records, is available at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JK9L-NZV

In addition to the documented children linked below, the couple also lost an infant James Alexander McDaniel (2 April 1813-12 Dec. 1813), according to family vitals records. He likely shares this cemetery with his father and infant siblings. Family vitals records do not cite burial locations, but did include generations of descendants whose details and distinguishing characteristics can be pieced together from a mixture of records.

Two of John's children are buried in Kensington Union (also called West Street) cemetery, one at Odd Fellows and one at Mount Peace. Graves from Kensington Union and Odd Fellows were subsequently moved to other cemeteries. The reinterment locations for this family are not yet confirmed, but St. John's Vault graves were mostly removed to Oakland Cemetery at Frankford. Kensington Union also is confusing in that it went by different local names, and there are separate memorials lists for each, when they refer to the same place. Most Kensington Union graves were removed to either Mt. Moriah Cemetery or Northwood Cemetery.

The death location for this John's wife is unclear but was in the greater Philadelphia area. Until 1853 she lived with her daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and William Calver. But Elizabeth died in 1853 and William remarried soon after. It is not yet clear where Hannah Ashton McDaniel spent her final three years. She had children and other blood or foster relatives in Philadelphia and Montgomery counties, and maybe Delaware or Bucks counties, PA, and across the river in New Jersey. And she was not as actively Quaker as her sister, in an era when other recordskeeping was limited or terse.
