She was the wife of John L. Spencer.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Antone and Mary (Estrella) Ferreira, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
Mrs. Spencer was formerly employed as a inspector at Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 40 years until her retirement.
She spent many years collecting clothing to send to people in the Cape Verde Islands. She was also very involved in organizations that were helping in the fight for an independent Cape Verde Islands, even traveling to New York to protest at the United Nations. She helped many friends and family members emigrate to this country and find work, at times taking some of these people into her home until they were able to settle on their own.
Mrs. Spencer was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband; 2 sons, John A. Spencer of New Bedford, and Anthony Spencer, and his wife Marilyn, of Acushnet; a daughter, Teresa A. Levesque, and her husband Ronald, of Acushnet; 3 brothers, August "Gus" Ferreira of New Bedford, Anthony Ferreira of Acushnet, and Dr. John Ferreira of Arizona; 3 sisters, Alice Ferreira and Elaine DeOliveira, both of New Bedford, and Libania "Bunny" Bala of Fairhaven; 2 grandchildren, Adam Spencer and Jacob Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Lionel Ferreira and Frank Ferreira.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Monday October 19th at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
