Major League Baseball Player. Born John Robert Savage, he made his initial impression on the baseball diamond during his high school years and following graduation, he enrolled at Staunton Military Academy where he continued his athletic excellence as a pitcher. Scouted by several Major League teams, he signed with the Philadelphia Athletics and marked his big league debut on June 24th, 1942. He pitched in 8 games that year. Savage would lose three prime years of his career, as he served with the United States Army during World War II. He earned three Purple Hearts and was a member of a unit which liberated a concentration camp. Upon his return home, he resumed his career with the Athletics and split time as a starter and reliever; he appeared in 40 games during 1946. The following year (1947), he yielded career-highs in wins with 8 and games pitched with 44. He went onto the St. Louis Browns in 1949 and retired after that season. He compiled a 16 win 27 loss record with a lifetime 4.32 ERA in 423 innings pitched. He extended his baseball career an additional five years in the Pacific Coast League and went onto work in the sporting goods industry while also teaching high school sports.
