Co. D, 51st Massachusetts Infantry

James, a blacksmith, enlisted in Company D, Massachusetts 51st Infantry Regiment on 30 Sep 1862.
He was promoted to Sergeant on 30 May 1863 and mustered out on 27 Jul 1863 at Worcester, MA.

From the "Providence Evening Press," (Providence, RI), 13 March 1866:
James Crockett, a returned soldier, was picked up in a senseless condition, on Saturday night last, by the roadside near Worcester, and taken to his boarding-house in that city, where he remained in unconsciousness until yesterday, when he died.
It was at first supposed that he was thrown from a carriage by the horse running away, but it is now believed that he was murdered, and four persons are detained in custody to testify before the coroner's jury.
