Jasper Newton Young was born on October 20, 1834 in Wilkinson County, Georgia to parents who were both born in Georgia. It is thought that his parents were James Young and Edney [Arnold] Young. He was one of nine children born to James and Edney Young. Jasper Newton Young died in Kiam, Polk County, Texas on February 02, 1927.

Jasper served in the Confederate Army, in Captain Benjamin's Louisiana Cavalry. He enlisted in Rapides Parish, Louisiana as a Private and was a Courier in the war. While home on furlough, he was shot by a band of "Jayhawkers". Some of the buckshot was still in his body when he died, one in his temple and some in his forearm which could be seen.

His company surrendered at New Orleans, Louisiana, with General Buckner on May 26, 1865 and was paroled at Alexandria, Louisiana. J. N. Young's military service records in the National Archives,Microfilm #320, Roll #30, Card #45064362, indicate that he appeared on a Roll of CSA Prisoners of War at Alexandria, Louisiana and that he was surrendered by General Smith to General Canby at New Orleans on the date above. He was paroled at Alexandria on June 13, 1865.

Jasper went to Texas and was registered to vote in Polk County on September 9, 1867 (Polk County, Texas Voter Registration List, Page 126, #926). At that time he was living in Cold Spring, which was in Precinct 7, and had been there for a year or more. He filed for his CSA pension in Polk County, Texas (file #36114) in August of 1919.

Jasper was married three times and was the Father of 19 children. His last child was born when he was 71 years old. He was married once in Mississippi and two times after he moved to Texas. In his later years he ran a General Store in IndianTown, near Livingston, and was Postmaster in Kiam, in Polk County, where he died on February 02, 1927. He is buried beside his third wife, Mary McKee Young, in Midway Cemetery, eighteen miles east of Livingston, in Polk County, Texas.
