Distaster Victim. He was the Senior Officer of the "RMS Titanic", and perished in it's sinking. The Chief Officer and second in command of the Titanic, directly under the command of Captain Edward John Smith, prior to joining the Titanic he served in the same capacity on board Titanic's sister ship Olympic. He joined the White Star Line shortly after gaining his masters certificate and joined the Titanic on April 9, 1912. He was one of the first officers to inspect the damaged ship along with the Titanic's designer and builder Thomas Andrews, following the ship's collision with an iceberg during the ship's maiden Atlantic crossing. During the ship's sinking he was placed in charge of the even numbered lifeboats located on the port side of the ship. He was last seen along with Sixth Officer James P. Moody desperately trying to help free the remaining collapsible lifeboats from the roof of the officer's quarters, and assisting women and children into the boats on the ship's starboard side during the Titanic's final moments. Wilde is memorialized on a family gravestone obelisk located in the Kirkdale Cemetery outside of Liverpool, England. The inscription reads in part: Henry T. Wilde, RNR Acting Chief Officer Who Met His Death in the "SS Titanic Disaster" 15th April 1912 aged 38 (Age 39, engraving error) years "One of Britain's Heroes."
