BROOKE JONES NARVEAZ Brooke Edin Jones Narveaz, a third-generation native Nevadan, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at a hospital in Hayward, Calif., after a long battle with alcoholism. She was born in Henderson Nov. 25, 1958, and was 49 years old. Brooke was known as an advocate for feline rescue, and over the years, she provided a loving refuge for many homeless animals, both domestic and wild. She always had a place in her heart for lost and unwanted pets. Throughout her life, she enjoyed music, and while growing up in Omaha, Neb., Brooke demonstrated exceptional talent as a pianist in statewide competitions. Brooke's naturally outgoing personality made her a popular student at Boulder City High School where she was active in cheerleading and had many friends. She was Boulder City's Damboree Queen in 1975. Brooke's family moved back to their home state of Nevada in 1973, and she graduated from BCHS in 1977. She attended one year at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City, Utah, and later trained as a dental hygienist in Henderson. Brooke worked as a hygienist in Las Vegas until she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988. She is survived by her devoted husband, of 17 years, John Narveaz; a daughter, Jacqueline Dee LaPaglia-Neal of Oakland, Calif.; two sons, Calvin and Reid Lathrop; her parents, Deanna Miller of Searchlight, and Reynold Jones of Las Vegas; her sisters, Heidi Jones Harris of Logan, Utah, and Troi Jones Nelson of Walnut Creek, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Victor Harris and Steve Nelson; nieces, Avenlea Harris and Caralee Nelson; and nephews, Jaeden Harris, McKay Harris, and Zak Nelson. Brooke was preceded in death by her younger brother, Mason Uther Jones; her grandmothers, Betty Reid and Pearle Jones; her grandfathers, Harold Ballinger and Uther Jones; her uncle, Mark Ballinger; and her cousin, Bryant Hess. A gathering for friends and family will be held in April at the Boulder City residence of Troi and Steve Nelson. Contact troi. [email protected]. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of Feral Felines, c/o Amber, P.O. Box 742, Searchlight, NV 89046.
