Staff Sgt. Kendall Thomas of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands joined the Police Athletic League in Pearson Gardens one summer and that triggered his desire for military service. Thomas was a member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp at Charlotte Amalie High School for four years. Upon graduation from JROTC, he flew to Puerto Rico to take the test for the Marine Corp, but there were no immediate career slots available, so he called home to tell his mother he was going to visit the Army recruiters because "he didn't want to come back home to the ghetto." Kendall always wanted to make sure things were done right. He couldn't pass a piece of trash without picking it up and disposing of it properly, and he adhered to a strict military philosophy: "If there's a problem, fix it." He made changes in my life by his actions and by the way he did things. Kendall was in his 17th year of Army service. He met his wife, Staff Sgt. Pamela Thomas, in 1997 and they married five years later. He was a soldier. But more important, he was a husband and a father. And he was a volunteer in the Army at a time when volunteers are hard to find. Kendall died in Baghdad, Iraq, as the result of a vehicle accident at age 36.
