Maria Anna was the oldest of eleven children of John Bernard and Maria Elisabeth (Unterbrink) Rottinghaus. She became the second wife of John Joseph Sherman (Schurman) on January 27, 1863. They had ten children. The youngest daughter, Louise, was born on February 2, 1880 and another, Mary Josephine on June 18, 1870, both so far unaccounted for.
