Danville- Larry Shanks, 74, of Danville, passed away at 10 am on Saturday July 27, 2013 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville.He was born on July 18, 1939 in Danville, IL to Ray and Jane Sowers Shanks.He was married to Barbara Howard on June 27, 1959 in Danville. After Barbara's death in 1990, Larry Married Alice Jameson on August 29, 1998. Alice Survives.
He is also survived by his daughters Pamela (Steven) Guess, Laura (Bryan Corn) Shanks, and Michelle (Kenny Gaddis) Gillum of Clemont, GA; Step daughters Carrie Freeland and Alice (Chuck) Lomax; His brothers Marlin (Barbara) Shanks, James (Betty) Shanks of Bourbonnais, IL and Gale Shanks of Arcola, IL; His Grandchildren Christopher and Rebecca Guess, Kyle Collum, Destin and Kerstin Gillum, Samantha and Jessica Corn; and his Step grandchildren Tad (Tiffany) Freeland, Erin (Ryan) Wells and Corey Lomax.
He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara and his parents
Larry completed his apprenticeship through Towne Machine Tool Co. and through Bohn Aluminum & Brass Company where he worked as a Toolmaker for many years. He became an Engineer and completed certification as a certified Manufacturing Engineer in the field of General Manufacturing Engineering in1986. He ended his working career and retired from Lenox-Heat Craft in Danville. He was also a member of the society of Manufacturing Engineers. Larry holds a United States Patent dated 7-27-99 for a Heat Exchanger Fin with Enhanced Corrugations. He participated in professional bass fishing tournaments and had published articles on bass fishing. Active member of the Bass Club for many years fishing in tournaments throughout Illinois and Indiana; and he continued to enjoy bass fishing in Florida with his friend Roger. Larry served his country in the National Guard: Troup A first Recon Squadron 106th Calvary; honorable discharge in 1965. Larry also enjoyed trapp and skeet shooting for many years with his wife, Barbara and his father in law Ernie Howard. Larry attended Second Church of Christ. Throughout his life was an active member of other churches and participated in many church activities: such as kids summer camps, choir, serving on advisory boards. He became a lay minister during his years and enjoyed the opportunity to teach others. He took chuckles to all of the children every week. Larry was also a member of the Danville Boat Club and enjoyed his friendships made there as well as the "breakfast club" at Steak and Shake.
A celebration of Larry's life will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday July 31, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home with Drew Mentzer officiating and burial at Sunset Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday July 30, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville.
