Joseph Alexander McCord was a renowned banker, chairman of the Mortgage Guarantee Company of America, and First Governor of the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta. He was also an organizer of St. Mark's Methodist Church.

The only son of William Stuart McCord and his second wife Mary Ann Moore (widow of Zacheus A. Middlebrook), Joseph moved to Atlanta after the death of his first wife, Lillie Croft, in childbirth. Their child Ione also died. After marrying Ella Hall of Warrenton, Georgia, Joseph had a son, Joseph Alexander McCord, Jr. (1898-1991). Joseph Jr. is buried near his father in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.
