She delighted her parents and grandparents with her singing, dancing, and entertaining performances. From that point on, she loved being on stage.
She moved to San Francisco after she finished High School, and worked in the city while she studied to be a concert pianist.
In 1944, she joined the US Navy WAVES, and served as a Yeoman 1st class. She met the love of her life, a handsome Marine Sgt Robert Bruce Burns, and they were married in 1951. While stationed in Naples, Italy, their son, Bobby was born. Their next assignment was Cherry Point Naval Air Station, North Carolina, where their son, Bruce was born. Bob and June were thrilled with their wonderful little family.
After her husband's sudden death in 1958, June moved back to San Francisco with her children to be with her mother and sister.
She returned to college, earned her teaching credentials at SFSU, and in 1964 moved to the Central Valley to accept a teaching position at Don Pedro Elementary School in Ceres. She loved her students and fellow teachers and taught for 24 years before retiring.
June took her active young sons camping and fishing, and often loaded up her Country Squire for an adventure to the coast, the mountains, or to visit her sister in San Francisco.
She loved music and the performing arts and rarely missed a Modesto Symphony or Townsend Opera performance. She sang women's barbershop for many years with the Sweet Adelines and various quartets and ensembles. She enjoyed attending events with her friends in the Red Hat Society.
She was proud of her family and lavished attention on each one. "Nana June" made every birthday and holiday an extravaganza. She had a sharp mind, incredible memory and enjoyed telling detailed stories from her lifetime experiences.
June is survived by her sons, Bob (Lee Ann) and Bruce; grandchildren, Derick, Ryan, and Katie; sister, Karen; and nephew, Matthew.
Funeral services with Military Honors will take place at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 2:00 pm.
