Maria came from the small village of Oberhallau, Schaffhausen, Switzerland. I have been unable to locate the ship's passenger list for the ship that she came over on.

She was the daughter of Melchior & Barbara (Baumann) Schaad. Melchior, his wife Barbara, and their youngest daughter, Ursula died in 1842. Their oldest/only son, Johan Jakob died in 1851.

Maria and her remaining three sisters came to America between 1854 & 1864. They were:

1. older sister Anna Barbara (married to David Maag 2 Aug 1852 in Neunkirch, Schaffhausen, Switzerland - had 3 sons, David, Mathias, & Samuel), who arrived about 1862-1864

2. younger sister Catherine (married Adolph Simmer - descendants in MO & IA), who arrived between 1854-1856

3. and younger sister Elizabeth (married Francis Schletzbaum - descendants in KS) who also arrived between 1854-1856.

Maria married John Miller and was the mother of George. She married John in Europe in 1852 (according to the family bible page) and came to the US during the 1850s (most likely 1854-56). They settled for a time in St. Clair County, IL near St. Louis, then moved to a farm just outside of Atkins, Benton County, IA.
